He was awarded his Master’s degree in Visual Arts by the University of Bologna with a thesis on early 17th-century sculptor Giovanni Tedeschi (supervised by Prof. A. Bacchi). Since 2022, he is cataloguing photographic collections of 17th–early 19th-century paintings at the F. Zeri Foundation.

His research centers on Bolognese sculpture from the 16th to 18th centuries. Recently, he was a speaker at the conference "Di sculti marmi ti fai scala al cielo" with a talk on Giovanni Zacchi. In 2021, he published a paper on the silversmithing work of sculptor Alessandro Manganti. He also authored entries on G.M. Mazza, Andrea Ferreri, and G.B. Bolognini for the Bologne au siècle des Lumières exhibition catalog (Ajaccio, 2024).

Abstract

This contribution examines some works attributed to sculptor Giuseppe Maria Mazza (1653-1741) including two terracotta reliefs documented through Felice Croci’s photographs kept in the University of Bologna’s Department of Arts archive: one relief is signed and dated by Mazza, while the other is here attributed to his student Angelo Piò. The article’s second part focuses on the stylistic profile of Bolognese sculptor Carlo Sarti before his relocation to Rimini, reintroducing two terracotta pieces to his catalog: a recently rediscovered oval available on the market and the Pietà from Bologna’s Church of the Mendicants.
