Abstract

Giovan Gioseffo Dal Sole stands as one of the most emblematic figures in the Bolognese artistic scene between the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite extensive research, the painter’s early years remain elusive. This paper explores, in light of new discoveries, the artistic profile of the young Dal Sole, distinguishing it from that of his main master, Lorenzo Pasinelli. To this end, it examines a group of paintings depicting female figures, whose attribution has long shifted between pupil and teacher. The study offers a compelling glimpse into Dal Sole’s artistic sensibility during his formative years under Pasinelli.
