Francesca Lui, PhD in Art History and recipient of a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Bologna, is a lecturer at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna. She has published the monographs L'antichità tra scienza e invenzione. Studi su Winckelmann e Clérisseau (2006) and Viaggio nelle stanze romantiche. Scena e retorica degli interni (2012). She has contributed to editorial projects such as L’Età moderna e contemporanea, edited by U. Eco (2012), and the General Catalogue of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna (2011, 2012). She was part of the research group studying unpublished drawings by Charles Percier at the Institut de France, published in 2017. Her work has appeared in scholarly journals and exhibition catalogues, including Clérisseau, Dessins du Musée de l’Ermitage Saint-Pétersbourg 1721–1820(Paris, 1995); La Roma di Piranesi. La città del Settecento nelle Grandi Vedute (Rome, 2006); and Canova e Bologna. Alle origini della Pinacoteca (Milan, 2021).
Giuseppina Raggi University of Lisbon
Giuseppina Raggi, PhD in Art History (University of Lisbon and University of Bologna, 2005), is Assistant Professor at the Art History Department of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (Portugal), and Integrated Researcher at the Art History Institute (IHA-NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST). She specializes in the study of quadratura painting in Italy, Portugal, and Brazil, she is currently engaged in research on the Portuguese eighteenth century, approached from a transnational and global perspective. Active in various national and European research projects, her recent publications include the monograph O projeto de D. João V. Lisboa ocidental, Mafra e o urbanismo cenográfico de Filippo Juvarra (Lisbon: Caleidoscópio, 2021) and the co-edited volume Filippo Juvarra, Domenico Scarlatti e il ruolo delle donne nella promozione dell'opera in Portogallo (Rome: Artemide). On quadratura, she recently published the article: “The church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black People in Salvador (Brazil), and the enslaved painter António Telles at Olinda,” in Stephen John Campbell and Stephanie Porras (eds.), The Routledge Companion to the Global Renaissance (New York: Routledge, 2024), pp. 624–639.

Abstract

This article reconstructs the history of the album titled “Drawings by Bolognese Artists of the 17th and 18th Centuries” (Bologna, Accademia di Belle Arti), based on archival records and Ingrid Svensson’s 1965 study. It traces the dispersal of the original drawings, correlating this process with exhibition practices from the 1970s onward. The text then delves into the question of attributions,offering an overview of the most significant ones and showcasing how the collection embodies the 18th-century Bolognese culture of quadratura and stage design, which profoundly influenced academic teaching in the 19th and 20th centuries.
